Find the joy of swimming

Meet the Founder

I’m Julie, and I’m the founder of Wonky Fish.

I started Wonky Fish because I believe swimming and learning to swim should be accessible to more people — whatever your age, ability, experience or confidence in the water.

I’ve been swimming for as long as I can remember. I started swimming competitively when I was seven and, at one point, was training for up to 24 hours a week alongside school. Looking back, being in, on or under the water has always been my happy place.

In 2026, I was diagnosed with ADHD — no surprise there really! — which perhaps explains some of my lifelong enthusiasm for throwing myself into things I love.

And swimming is definitely one of them.

I’ve been teaching for 15 years and, along the way, I’ve collected a clutch of qualifications and, more importantly, a huge amount of experience. I’ve taught complete beginners, people who are terrified of the water, children and adults, recreational swimmers and competitive athletes — both disabled and non-disabled.

I honestly think teaching swimming is the best job in the world. It’s the longest I’ve done any one thing apart from being human and being a parent!

Wonky Fish is about sharing that love of the water. I want to create swimming experiences where people feel understood, supported and able to learn in their own way — and hopefully discover, as I did, that the water can become a pretty wonderful place to be.
